Everyone back, behind those crates!" While he knew half the room outranked him, he knewthe rank pips would not protect them from the blast or shrapnel. (Tag anyone in the room) He crossed to where Vesper crouched in an uncomfortableposition. "Your back 5 minutes, and already nearly getting blown up." Gently he opened the side facing panel so he could seewhat he was dealing with. "Clever." He muttered. "They rigged aphoton grenade to the power line. We send an engineer to take down the shields, engineers are not suspecting a trap and the grenade detonates killing theengineer. This was the obvious place to begin?" (Tag Vesper) Engineers, scientists and medics are the high valuetargets. As are bomb disposal techs. He moved the wires out the way, to expose the grenade, andthen rummaged through the kit at Ash s feet. Finding a small plasma cutter hebegan. The out case of the grenade sliced open like an over-ripe apple, thecase was designed to fragment and cause death and injury. "Do you know thecorrect terminology when someone gets blown up, or killed by shrapnel?" Heasked as he worked. "Violent, penetrative trauma leading to injuries incompatiblewith life." The explosive element glowed faintly after he removed thecover for it. Putting down the cutter and taking up his knife again, the razor sharp tip sliced through the plastic explosive, which in turn woulddetonate the photonic core. Little chunks fell to the floor at his feet as heworked. "Ok. This is the tricky bit." He looked Ash in the face."Do. Not. Move." (Tag Vesper) He very slowly rotated the core, two full turns, and thenthree. halfway round the fourth turn it shifted and he froze. No bang. He muttered as he gingerly slid the core downand off the detonator and lowered it to the floor. He let out the breath he had been holding. Safe! hedeclared as he nodded. This was the obvious place to begin?" Ash look wide eyed at first and the scowled at Jonas as he ducked behind a crate."Hey - I didnt put that thing there!" she protested her innocence and her feeling ofnot wanting to be blown into tiny pieces humorously as her fingers started to numb alittle as she held the cable perfectly still now, "Someone needs to keep you in ajob." Engineers, scientists and medics are the high valuetargets. Not. Move." She looked down at the device as it was dismantled and then glared back at Jonas,"Me, move... you must be thinking of someone who what to be torn into littlepieces!" He very slowly rotated the core, two full turns, and thenthree. halfway round the fourth turn it shifted and he froze. No bang. He muttered as he gingerly slid the core downand off the detonator and lowered it to the floor. He let out the breath he had been holding. Safe! hedeclared as he nodded. "The detonator will still go bang when you move, butnothing more than a slight pop. No explosive force. "That so... hmmm..." he mind ticked over, "HEY JONAS! come take a look at this!"Jonas cautiously moved over, "Yea, sorry i kinda missed it?""Its ok you can take it back as a souvenir now," Ash smiled at him as he picked itoff the floor and let go of the power cord.POP!Jonas jumped back quickly as it fizzled out in his hand. All ourweaponryuses blue metal."He pointed to the blast marks on thewalls, then at the ones on the crates nearestthem. "Here thearea of the scorch marks is bigger, this indicates the quality ofthefocal lens for the beam is lesser, the beam is more unstable."He moved to alarger dark smudge on the wall. High powered, probablyRomulan, and this one looksto be klingon.""Given the mix of weaponry here,my instinct says this could be a mercenary squad, orpirates orscavengers of some sort."Bill considered the Lieutenant'sassessment but he came to a different conclusion. It is not probable that this attackwas from pirates and scavengers. Their modusoperandi is to hiteasy targets with a high value. Pirates and scavengers do nothavethe capability to break even the light encryption messages thisoutpost wastransmitting. Therefore, this group would have no idea ofwhat was happening here andit would not hold their interest. Additionally, this group would not hang around toplace booby traps. They like to hit and run. I would not think it would be Klingonasthere is no glory in killing an enemy with a booby trap. Thatleaves a mercenarysquad or Romulans. If it was a mercenary squadthe question to ask is who hired themand why? The Romulans are verycapable of breaking the encryption so it maybe theRomulans with amercenary squad were the aggressors.
